41 CALF News • June | July 2021 • www.calfnews.net Letters to the Editor Betty Jo, Thanks for the compliments to Eugene Schwertner in Recollections (“Eugene Schwertner and Capitol Land & Livestock,” April/May 2021). The late summer and fall after I graduated from college, I worked for Eugene. I had driven for Tom Reid in Amarillo and realized that I didn’t know anything but Hereford cattle. Eugene agreed to take me on. My idea was that I would be in Austin and would work at Capitol during the day and party with friends at night. Eugene’s idea was that he would work me hard enough that I wouldn’t feel like partying and he was right. My only day off was Thursday when I would get to go to the Lockhart sale with Eugene. He packed a graduate degree into a short period of time, and I never regretted those long hours or the time I spent with that incredible man. Eugene gave me my master’s, and my Ph.D. came under Champ Gross once I returned to Amarillo.  JAY O’BRIEN Amarillo, Texas JimWhitt, Your article about climate change in CALF News (Whitt & Wisdom, “The Law of Unintended Consequences,” April/May 2021) was spot on. It was well written and cuts right through the climate change fog generated by media and our govern- Gatherings Mrs. Colorado Spring Bull Sale Season Folks gather every year during bull sale season. Not only is the global warming theory incorrect, but the technologies that are supposed to eliminate it are at the same time causing such effects. But we’ll never see this study mentioned in the mainstream media (MSM). I have developed a talk I frequently give to cattlemen and other ag groups called“Modern Ag in a Facebook Culture.” In that talk, I defend/promote the production of beef cattle, the technologies we use to raise beef and the value of beef in the human diet. I’ve been doing this talk for about 15 years now, and originally I thought that the greatest bias against the consump- tion of beef in our diet was due to the (unfounded) fears of increased rate of heart disease, obesity, colon cancer, etc. I’ve now come to the belief that the No. 1 reason many do not eat meat is that they’ve been convinced that beef production increases atmospheric CO 2 and methane, which will destroy the planet and human life due to global warming, climate change, climate disruption (or whatever the trending title du jour is popular). I see this response especially in the younger (Millen- nial) age groups. They very easily accept the value of beef and even beef fat as being heart healthy, but I notice much skepti- cism when I touch on the global warming discussion. The MSM, much of the scientific community and our government institutions have been very effective in promoting the lie of global warming. Even the HHS/USDA-authored “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” recently recommended decreasing red meat consumption to help reduce CO 2 levels and thus reduce global warming.  GARY E.
