Brown was founder of Cattle Empire, LLC, at Satanta, Kan., which at one time encom- passed three feedyards. He was also instrumental in the construction and ownership of several other businesses in the area, including Santa Fe Trail Dairy, Sublette Fertilizer, Alfalfa Inc., and High Plains Feed. Brown is survived by his four chil- dren, nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Alan Larsen, 65, passed away March 15 in Arlington, Neb. Larsen founded Nova Microbial Technologies in 2002. He was a pioneer in microbial feeding and sold the company to Lallemand Animal Nutri- tion in 2017. He was looking forward to retirement, fishing and golf- ing. Larsen is survived by his wife, Deb, and four daughters. JimWhitt, I just finished your Whitt and Wisdom column in CALF (Feb./March 2019) that arrived today. I knew much of the Southwest Airlines story, but had no idea how you got the door open for this account by giving a book to a flight attendant. One truly never knows where the next lead comes from, but opening all doors given has to increase the odds of success. Joe Neill Letter to the Editor Paul Brown The following National Cattlemen’s Beef Association officers were elected at the Cattle Industry Convention in Janu- ary: Jennifer Houston, president; Marty Smith , president-elect; Jerry Bohn , vice president; and Joe Guild , treasurer. Kansas Jerry Bohn received the Kansas Stockman of the Year Award pre- sented by the Livestock & Meat Industry Council . Bohn is part owner of Pratt Feeders. Company BioZyme® Inc. , has promoted Jake Warntjes , Hennessey, Okla., to the role of national sales director. The company also hired Cory Nichols , Blanco, Texas, as its director of national sales-south. CattleFax elected the following slate of officers at this year’s annual business meeting in January: Don Quincey , Chief- land, Fla., president; Mark Frasier , Fort Morgan, Colo., president-elect; Chris Kalkowski , Omaha, Neb., finance direc- tor; Pono Von Holt , Kapaau, Hawaii, northwest director; and Jeff Sparrowk , Clements, Calif., western director. Diamond V announced two promo- tions within the company’s ruminant team: Mark Tegeler is now technical service specialist, and Darrel Rennich is ruminant field technical specialist. Double S Liquid Feed Services has hired Jacob Shepard as office manager. Double S also recently promoted Grant Hughes from compliance director to general manager. Adam Ford was pro- moted to replace Hughes as compliance director. MS Biotec, LLC, has hired Carl Guth- rie, DVM , as chief commercial officer. Dr. Guthrie will be responsible for provid- ing leadership for the sales, marketing and technical services teams within the company. National Beef Packing Company, LLC, announced that it will acquire Iowa Premium, LLC . Iowa Premium, located in Tama, Iowa, employs more than 800 people and processes approximately 1,100 black Angus cattle per day. The company is well known for marketing high-quality beef products worldwide under several proprietary brands includ- ing Iowa Premium Angus® and Est. 8 Angus®. Jerry Bohn Dr. Hill explained the requirement of a 90 percent reduc- tion in egg count for a dewormer to be considered successful. The fact that some worms are becoming resistant to various dewormers may lie in a given product’s convenience; too much use, too frequently, or used in an improper dosage can contrib- ute to the development of parasite resistance on a given farm or ranch. Tying things together It is increasingly obvious that one cannot simply purchase and use a given health product successfully without properly being educated in its use and administration. Merck Animal Health, having recognized the need to instruct our livestock care givers, is taking a huge initiative not only to produce effec- tive products, but also promote management practices that will benefit cattle, cattlemen and consumers in a holistic manner.
