The ranch-raised Montana native grew up with Polled Herefords, a herd her great-grand- mother founded over 80 years ago near Bridger. Family diversification later included feedlots and cattle trucking. Addition- ally, her grandparents ran Thoroughbred horses. Her abilities surfaced early in life when she became enamored with the expensive Breyer horse models. After pestering her mother for yet more (and more) models, her exasperated mom gave Herden some clay and told her to make her own. Indeed, she did. While in college at Cody, Wyo., the young entrepreneur worked at a bronze foundry, garnering experience in molding and casting. The work was necessary for her to perfect her craft; however, bronze is very expensive and difficult to deal with. Luckily, Y-Tex Corporation was located close by. The eartag manufac- turer aided Herden in transitioning to resin, an easier and less expensive casting material. She took the new technique and ran with it, and now produces beautiful, affordable resin sculptures of every kind of livestock. A 27-year veteran of sculpting profes- sionally, her husband, Brian, acts as her “engineer,” making finished wooden bases for each item. She has produced trophies and awards for many national breed associations in every meat animal species. She also sells drawings, paint- ings and jewelry. Bronze sculptures are still available upon request. Now residing in southern Minnesota, she loves fishing, riding her horses and following the family’s racing Quarter Horses at area tracks.
