40 CALF News • April | May 2020 • www.calfnews.net On the Human Side Trail’s End National Building on its updated National Manual launched in Summer 2019, the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program has updated its online training modules to make them more realistic and useful. The new modules are now available to those who are first becoming BQA certified online and those who are getting recertified as required after three years. First launched in 2017, the online training modules have been embraced to date by more than 100,000 in the cattle industry. BQA certifications are also available at in-person training events offered through state beef councils, cattlemen’s affiliates, Extension programs and other local efforts throughout the country. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) elected the following officers during the Cattle Industry Convention in February. Fifth-generation Florida rancher Marty Smith was elected president; Jerry Bohn of Kansas was named president- elect; Don Schiefelbein of Minnesota was elected vice presi- dent; and Todd Wilkinson of South Dakota was elected chair of the NCBA Policy Division while Wyoming rancher Mark Eisele was elected policy vice chair. Buck Wehrbein of Nebraska was elected chair of the NCBA Federation Division and Scott McGregor of Iowa was elected vice chair. NCBA has canceled its Spring Legislative Conference, scheduled for March 31-April 2, 2020. The NCBA Spring Legislative Conference was scheduled to follow the Public Lands Council’s annual legislative conference, which was also cancelled. Company Mark Frasier of Fort Morgan, Colo., was elected 2020 presi- dent of CattleFax at the organization’s annual meeting, held in conjunction with the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show. President elect is Pono von Holt of Kamuela, Hawaii. Jeff Sternberger of Ingalls, Kan., was elected as the new Central Region director while J erry Adams of Broken Bow, Neb., and Dale Smith of Amarillo, Texas, were re-elected as directors for the North Plains and Southwest regions, respectively. Other directors currently serving terms for CattleFax are: Don Quincey , Chiefland, Fla., Southeast direc- tor and immediate past president; Jeff Sparrowk of Clements, Calif., director for the Western Region; and Midwest Director Nick Hunt of Atlantic, Iowa. Chris Kalkowski of Omaha, Neb., continues to serve as finance director. RICHARD (DICK) CROW , 95, of Denver, Colo., passed away Feb. 20. Dick grew up around the livestock industry and even- tually made a career out of it. Dick’s father, Nelson, founded the Western Livestock Journal (WLJ), and after serving in the Navy and attending college, Dick went on to work for his father as a fieldman for the Western Dairy Journal and eventu- ally was fieldman for the WLJ. He became publisher in 1968 and retired in 2000. He is survived by his son and daughter. KENNETH S. ENG, JR. , Ph.D., 82, of Columbia, Miss., and San Antonio, Texas, passed away Feb 28. Ken earned his doctorate degree in animal nutrition from Oklahoma State University and went on to have a long career as a consulting feedyard nutritionist, rancher and poet. Ken was a pioneer in the beef cattle industry and has left a legacy that will not be forgotten. He is survived by his two daughters. JIMMIE LEE GILL , 74, of Blanket, Texas, passed away Feb. 3. Jimmie was marketing director at the Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) from 1975 until he retired in 2008. He loved the people he worked with and all the TCFA members. He was well respected throughout the livestock industry, and producers sought his expertise and insights. He is survived by his wife, Sherry, and two children. JOHN L. SCHURR , 79, of Farnam, Neb., passed away Jan 4. John started raising purebred Angus cattle and farming with his brother, Jerry, in 1961. In 1983, they added a purebred Charolais herd to Schurrtop Angus and Charolais Ranch, which has been a farming, cattle feeding and purebred opera- tion for four generations. John had a great love for cattle and over the years served on numerous committees in the Angus and Charolais breeds. Schurrtops showed cattle at the National Western Stock Show in Denver for 50 consecutive years and competed in the Great Western Beef Expo and Beef Empire Days in Kansas where they won the coveted Brookover Award. He had a true passion for cattle feeding and believed in letting the merits of his cattle do the talking. He is survived by his wife, Kay, and four sons. SYLVIA WEBSTER , 87, of Greeley, Colo., passed away Jan. 20. Sylvia’s husband, Bill, ran the family’s farming and commercial cattle feeding operation while she handled the bookkeeping. Webster Feedlots became the largest family-owned feedlot operation in Colorado. Sylvia is survived by her husband and three children. Betty Jo, Your [Feb./March 2020] issue of CALF News is probably the best one I have read in sometime. It’s loaded with great information. Good job!
