They boast one of the most advanced logistical infra- structure systems in the world. They can track produce ship- ments with extreme ease in the populated country. Like many countries, South Korea is dependent on food imports. While they don’t have any regulation specific to e-commerce and e-produce, they did pass the “Special Act on Safety Manage- ment of Imported Food.” This act allows for greater tracking of imported items, but again does not ensure cold chain of products once leaving the sellers warehouse to the consumer’s doorstep. What’s next? The world is only going to see growth in the e-produce sector and consumer demand for convenient safe products, leaving many regulators wondering whose jurisdiction or responsibility it would be to support this sector, and how to even begin to tackle this quickly growing industry. Individual companies are taking the lead in helping to promote food safety. Alibaba, one of the largest leaders of e-produce in the world, has taken steps recently to implement block-chain technology. They will be working with Australian and New Zealand suppliers to provide assurance and verification of food products. These types of innovations may lead to future food safety regulations implemented by governments across the globe.
