TRUSTING IN TRADE was the theme for the 22 nd Biannual World Meat Con- gress held in Dallas, Texas, May 30-June 1. The event drew more than 750 attendees representing 48 nations. The agenda consisted of a broad spectrum of keynote speakers and panel discussions on the outlook of global trade. Our U.S. Secretary of Agri- culture Sonny Perdue identified that the United States has “a noble cause” to feed the world, sharing four ideas – increase production, help developing nations, develop science policies through science- based high technology, and promote free, open trade. The afternoon’s panels of dis- tinguished trade policy experts exchanged views on the outlook for the global trading system and factors most likely to affect the global red meat industry over the next three years. Those included the evolution of the dominant Chinese market and the exporting countries that could satisfy the growing global demand in feeding 9.7 billion people by 2050. Attendees could submit questions through a mobile app. The day wrapped up with the IMS prize presentation to young talent in meat science and technology. The recipient was Ohio State University student Michelle LeMaster, based on her research with potassium carbonate as a phosphate alternative. There were also memorial tributes to Arturo Llavallo, past IMS president and Chris Oberst, founding father. Friday morning opened with the Thursday announcement from the White House on tariffs being imposed for imports of Canadian and Mexican steel and aluminum. This raised con- cerns from some attendees in regard to continued NAFTA negotiations. The Thursday plenary sessions included opening comments by the president of International Meat Secretariat (IMS), Guillaume Roué.
