Among the oldest continual brands, Rich- ard King originated his “mark” in 1869 and was registered in 1943 after the Texas legislature passed a new bill to deregister unused brands and update the system by re-registeing existing brands for continued use. Another recognizable brand from Texas history, the XIT, was report- edly devised by Abner P. Blocker with his boot in the dust. It was one thought not to be changed easily, as requested by its first ranch manager, B.H. (Barbeque) Campbell formerly of Wichita, Kansas. An experi- enced rancher and breeder, his nickname didn’t originate from tending a smoker full of brisket and ribs, but from his Bar BQ brand for his ranch on the Medicine Lodge Creek in Kansas’s Indian Territory. While the XIT Ranch is more legendary in Texas political history than a successful cattle operation, the brand was said to signify “ten in Texas” since the land covered all or portions of Dallam, Hartley, Oldham, Deaf Smith, Parmer, Castro, Bailey, Lamb, Cochran and Hockley counties, but others speculated it really meant “biggest in Texas.” Kansas’s Department of Agriculture further offers this commonsense approach to cattle rustling – identify all animals with brands. Given a choice, a thief will steal UN-branded cattle first. Also, check your pastures, count your herd, keep your fences repaired, and chain and lock gates. Following Keen’s lyrics, “Randy got behind the wheel Said boys I’m going home. We turned around to face our fate.” For me going home, I trust I chained and locked the ranch gate.  Kyle Latham (TX) 254-715-2162 Chad Holt (TX-NM) 903-272-5010 Clyde Smith (MS-AR-LA) 601-540-613 Joseph Woods(MO-IA-IL) 660-341-5413 Jeff Anslinger (MO-KS-NE-IA) 816-244-7340 Gary West (TN-KY-IL-MO-AR) 731-335-3023 Bryan Sundsbak (ND-SD-WY-NE-MT) 605-209-0559 MLS #5 STRESS TUB ►For young cattle at weaning, shipping, or times of stress. ►An energy, protein, vitamin, and trace mineral tub. ►Contains Availa®4 and CELMANAX™SCP. Continued from page 15 volume, but is harder pressed to collect data. Under current production systems, it’s simply not feasible for commercial producers to collect data on each animal utilizing traditional collection methods. “Technology and innovation will help the commercial sector collect data,” Genho said.“Look at what camera grading did for packing plants and what GrowSafe technology has done for intake evaluation for the feedlot sector. Innovation will help solve collection problems in the commercial sector.” The seedstock sector has made a considerable investment in data collection and a concerted effort to make sure that owner- ship has been carefully and fully addressed so that their data can benefit all. 
