The resulting softening of his hit on the headgate was a “light bulb” moment that came practically with the first steer run through during research. It reduces stress on both livestock and handler, and it was done with no one around the chute. Laser sensors are accurate for monitoring the movement and restraining cattle. They even measure cattle height and whether their heads are caught properly. The chute is also capable of weighing the individual animals and automati- cally measuring and administering a correct dose of pour-on. How did all this technology get refined? Ulrich explains that they had an initial seven-year testing process at two feedyards. Now, there is a third yard cooperating with Brute Cattle Equip- ment, refining and adjusting the chute to respond to additional situations. Brute Cattle Equipment customers are treated like partners, he say. Much training is done in test yards, and additional training comes when purchased equipment is set up. Clients are encouraged to call Brute Cattle Equipment with ques- tions after installation and, ideally, there are cattle ready to work at chute setup time to further acclimate employees to the new system. Ulrich himself may spend a few days at a given property. Although the system sounds complicated, its actual operation is relatively simple. Adjustments to specific groups of cattle are made with factory presets. The chute may be set to accommodate, for example, 500- weight calves up to 1,000-pound yearlings and larger. How foolproof is this thing? All chutes are rated to be outside. They will stand rain or a real thorough washing. The high-tech part of this chute is slated to last 15 years, with 24/7 use. The Brute chute itself will wear out before the electronics, and the PRODUCT INFORMATION NADA 141-334, Approved by FDA. 048539 R10 RESIDUE WARNING: Cattle intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 21 days of the last treatment. Return on Investment (ROI) analyses have shown positive results. The basic Brute Chute plus the tech package will run $40,000-$45,000. A 20,000-head yard may be able to eliminate one employee position, paying for the chute in as few as four years. Even 5,000-head yards have shown the abil- ity to have an acceptable ROI, taking about 10 years for the chute to pay for itself. Ulrich says we are on the tip of the iceberg in terms of this kind of technology. Efficiency of cattle handling and safety for both livestock and people will continue to improve. Safety is the frontrunner, along with a reduction in bruising and added average daily gain from less stressful inter- actions with people. Ulrich says Brute Cattle Equipment appreciates their customers and the people of agriculture. He feels blessed to live in the United States and have hard-working, great people surrounding him. Dodge Manufac- turing-Brute Cattle Equipment plans on being around for another 50 years.  Matt Ulrich is the owner of Brute Cattle Equipment, Dodge, Neb., and the man behind the Stealth Chute.
