He also continues to act as an order buyer for many longtime customers. The 1,000-2,000 head he buys for others each week is part of his regular routine. “As a kid, I was unloading a bunch of long-tailed heifers off of a semi out back and was struck with the thought that we should be sorting the cattle into uniform groups,” Pogue says. Years later, that thought came back to him as he was evaluating the success of the special sales he conducted at Sulphur Springs Livestock Auction for the Northeast Texas Beef Improvement Organization (NETBIO). “I think the good Lord must have been planting that idea in my head so I would be ready to take on the task of the NETBIO sales,” he recalls. During the 1990s, dairies began exiting northeast Texas due to market and environmental pressures. The sale barn had depended on those dairies in order to stay in business. The NETBIO special feeder and stocker cattle sales came at an opportune time to fill the gap created by that exodus. Iowan Phil Schooley had come to Sulphur Springs for an Extension pro- gram in which he discussed the proto- cols and requirements to have a special pre-conditioned cattle sale. Through the leadership of a number of local cattle- men, bankers and veterinarians, the sales became reality and have continued to grow over time, reaching a total in excess of 45,000 head in 2017.
