While technology has improved many aspects of our industry, it has also com- plicated many aspects of it as well. Aside from being an extra hand in physical labor, young people are needed more and more for their expertise in technology to keep up with protocol and bookkeeping. The hardest job in the world is to train and educate your replacement. It’s hard to go from being the boss to teach- ing someone else how to be the boss. But, if you want your operation to carry on, you have no other choice. Don’t miss this. Being a mentor to another is not about making them do what you do or think the way you think, it’s about helping them accomplish the goal and embracing the differences. By the same token, those of you in the mentoree role need to have a coachable spirit. Sit back and learn all of the whys before you start trying to change the hows. If you don’t understand the overall picture, you cannot implement effec- tive change. Ask all of the questions you can and take constructive criticism as a learning opportunity. Always improve on your skills, take courses whenever they are available. Just like a position in the corporate world, you need to continue your learning. Most of all, remember that each of you has strengths and weaknesses. Play off these and complement each other. Working with your family should be enjoyable and rewarding. There’s a future for everyone who would like one in agriculture; it might just look a bit different depending on the path you choose. Agriculture is something that we all need and always will. There is room at the table for each of us. 
