Barb Downey grew up in Michigan, and her dad, Joe Downey, was from a ranching family fromWyoming. Joe’s father moved his family to Manhattan, Kan., during the Depression so everyone could attend college. Joe’s career goal was ulti- mately to get back into agriculture, and he did just that by purchasing land, bit by bit, in the Kansas Flint Hills southwest of Wamego. Joe founded family-owned Downey Ranch, Inc., in 1986, the same year Barb graduated from Kansas State University (KSU) with an animal science degree. The ranch started with an Angus-based commercial cow herd. In 1990, they purchased their first registered Angus and SimAngus cows. Barb Downey married Joe Carpen- ter that same year. Currently, Joe and Barb handle day-to-day operations along with daughters Anna and Laura. Anna is a junior at Texas Tech in pre-nursing, and Laura is a freshman at KSU majoring in animal science/business. The ranch sold everything private treaty until 2003, when they held their first pro- duction sale with Mary Ann and Kevin Kniebel, Kniebel Cattle Company. This year marked their 16th production sale. They are developing seedstock selected to thrive in real-world conditions for their producer customers. When Barb isn’t ranching, she still finds herself outdoors. She loves hiking, exploring and camping. A big dream of hers is to go on a right/left camping trip and see where it takes her. Barb is the 2019 Kansas Livestock Association president. She is an amazing leader, a talented industry spokesperson and a pas- sionate rancher. 
