Corn harvested for cattle consumption represents only 9 percent of the harvested corn, whereas the ethanol industry accounts for 37.5 percent of the corn acre- age in the United States. On the average, it takes 308 gallons of water to produce a pound of boneless beef, not the falsely estimated 24,000 gallons some want us to believe. Total fossil fuel input in U.S. beef produc- tion is equivalent to just 0.7 percent of our nation’s total consumption of fossil fuels. Mitloehner further pointed out that while the media and the socialist activists cling to the 18-percent figure and harkens us to return to the practices of our grand- parents as being environmentally friendly. In reality, those practices required more land, more feed, more water, more time and labor with resulting increases in GHG emissions, compared to modern, more intensive productions systems, which continue to improve with technology that makes our food production efficient and safe. These critics continue to disparage the livestock industry by promoting a vegetarian life- style. They liken eating a hamburger to driving a Hummer and say that Meatless Mondays can save the world. Mitloehner’s figures show that if ALL Americans adopted Meatless Mon- days, the reduction in GHG emissions would only total 0.6 percent. Contrasted with the replacement of all incandescent light bulbs with “Energy Star” rated bulbs, the reduction would be 1.2 percent, twice that of giving up meat. With the last leg of my trip home through the Smoky Hill River valley and then on to my ranch gate, my drive became even more calm and relaxing as I changed my radio dial to my favorite “Red Dirt” music station and abstained from the main- stream media’s inane rhetoric and fear-mongering. The road- side vistas were as they’re supposed to be as this valley’s name suggests. Tonight, I would not be observing Meatless Monday, not just because I did the math, but because the barbeque grill is beckoning as I scored a couple of “steakhouse” burgers from my favorite butcher shop.  BEYOND THE RANCH GATE Continued from page 36 Where's the beef? Right here. CSU's NEW MEAT SCIENCE FACILITY Continued from page 30 labs and/or plants off-site in order to experience the process firsthand. Now, it’s all under one roof on campus in this innovative facility that will serve students well into the future. “We take a global view of our education and research, and we were looking for new ways to spur inno- vation in livestock and meat science, food safety, food security and animal welfare,” said Ajay Menon, Dean of the CSU Col- lege of Agricultural Sciences. “Our goal for this facility is not only to support teaching and research – it has to impact the industry and advance the way meat processing is done around the world,” he continued. For JBS, the partnership with CSU serves as a long-term investment in the competitiveness of food and farming in the state of Colorado, across the United States and around the world. The JBS Global Food Innovation Center enables CSU to expand as a source of innovation and discovery in the food industry and prepare future leaders to take on the challenges of tomorrow. “We now have the ability to create opportunity for young people to learn about our industry in the most advanced center of its kind,” said Gilberto Tomazoni, JBS Global CEO.“These students are the future of agriculture and food.”  Kyle Latham (TX) 254-715-2162 Chad Holt (TX-NM) 903-272-5010 Clyde Smith (MS-AR-LA) 601-540-613 Joseph Woods(MO-IA-IL) 660-341-5413 Jeff Anslinger (MO-KS-NE-IA) 816-244-7340 Gary West (TN-KY-IL-AR-MO) 731-335-3023 Bryan Sundsbak (ND-SD-WY-NE-MT) 605-209-0559 MLS #12 HI MINERAL ► Tub Product with Controlled, Consistent Consumption ► Concentrated Levels of Vitamins & Trace Minerals ► Replaces Loose Mineral Products ► Balanced Tub Mineral Supplement plus Energy ► Added Organic Copper, Zinc, Manganese & Cobalt ► Higher Conception Rates MLS #12 BREEDER MINERAL MLS #12 MINERAL PRODUCTS THE COMPLETE AND VERSITILE MINERAL SUPPLEMENT MLS #12 is available with Altosid® IGR Horn Fly Control
