31 CALF News • October | November 2018 • www.calfnews.net R ain did little to dampen attendance at a gathering of cattle producers and friends at the Dismal River Golf Club (DRGC) south of Mullen, Neb., earlier this summer. “We had the most golfers ever – 46. Sometimes it misted, but it never let loose,” says Tessa Quittner, secretary of the host organiza- tion, Nebraska Cattlemen Sandhills Affiliate (NCSA). Quittner loves to golf, but this year could only watch her husband, Adam, and others play as they were expecting their second child end of July. This was the sixth year the summer meeting, complete with golfing in the morning and ending with a great steak supper, was held at the DRGC.“What makes it so successful are our sponsors – so a huge thank you [to them]. The NCSA asks for sponsorships once a year and divides the funds between all their events. Memberships have also raised enough funds to award three scholarships, which were presented after supper to Kelsey Phillips, Mullen, who will be a sophomore in college. Jaylee Simonson and Paige Martindale, who graduated in May from Sandhills Public School at Dunning also received scholarships. The Nebraska Cattlemen (NC) has divided the state into nine regions, with 44 affiliates divided among those regions. The NCSA is in Region 2, where the other affiliates include the Hyannis Affiliate, the Bassett Affiliate and the Valentine Cattlemen. Besides Quittner, other officers include President Frank Utter, Brewster; Dan Wacker, Brewster; Troy Saner of Dunning; Kelly Kennedy, Purdum; Adam Zutavern, Dunning; and John Kraye, and Miles Mundorf, Mullen. Also on the NCSA Board is vice chairman of member services for Region 2 and NCSA past presi- dent Brenda Masek of Purdum. The NCSA includes all or parts of the counties of Blaine, Thomas, Hooker and southern Cherry.“DRGC is a great place to hold our summer get-together,” Quittner says.“Besides this event, we organize a Winter Ball, which will be a New Year’s Eve Ball at the new fair building on the Hooker County Fairgrounds at Mullen. This fall we will host our annual fall ranch tour.” The NCSA also provides hamburgers with all the trimmings at some of the local blood drives held in Thedford and Dunning.
