The milking claw is shown and the instructor explains exactly how it works, assuring the audience that it does not hurt the cow when used. The MDC instructor explains the process of how each cow is handled at a dairy when milking time comes every day, including sanitation of the udder prior to milking, placing the claw while again assuring the students that it does not hurt the cow, and then beginning the milking process. The response of the audience, whether students or adult, is always the best. “Oohh!”,“Wow!”,“Cool!” are just some of the responses. For many, it may be the very first time they have ever seen a cow being milked. The demonstration truly brings the farm to the school! The Mobile Dairy Classroom program presented by the Southwest Dairy Museum, Inc., is paid for by dairy checkoff funds. For every 100 pounds of milk sold, a dairy producer is required through the Federal Dairy Check-Off Program to give 15 cents – 5 cents goes to the National Dairy Board and the remaining 10 cents goes to a Dairy Qualified Program.
