Martin was a pioneer in many beef cattle management innovations, including integrated resource management, and incorporated them into the family opera- tion, Jorgensen Land and Cattle. He was an original member of the South Dakota Livestock and Pro- duction Records system and was involved in the Beef Improve- ment Federation from its beginning in 1968. He is survived by his four children. Dear Betty Jo, Thank you for publishing the article about triticale, writ- ten by Patti Wilson [Chuteside Manner, CALF News , Aug./ Sept.]. It was well researched and well written. However, it gave the impression that there is “a” triticale on the market. In fact, there are many varieties of triticale available, some good, some great, some, shall we say,“inappropriate.” There are Spring and Winter varieties, bearded and beardless, forage and grain, etc. There are more than a million acres grown in the United States. Patti is spot on when she says only buy from a reputable dealer. While it was seen in nature in 1875, it wasn’t until the late 1930s that scientists learned how to make it fertile. The first commercial variety was released in 1968. And, yes, there is triticale bread – not made with 100 percent triticale flour, but used at the 30-40 percent level. I tested some new bread lines last week that made beautiful bread at 50 percent of the flour. Ron Kershen Wattley Seed Spearman, Texas National The American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) and Merck Animal Health presented Chuck Guard, DVM, Ph.D. , with the Mentor of the Year Award at the AABP Annual Conference. This annual award recognizes an individual who has played a role in educating, supporting and advancing the careers of future bovine veterinarians. Dr. Guard has been a large animal veterinarian for the last 34 years with 28 of those working in the Ambulatory and Production Medicine Clinic at Cornell University . His research efforts revolved around cattle lameness, evaluation of management procedures for routine activities and interventions for common diseases. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has named Colin Woodall as chief executive officer. The associa- tion also named Ethan Lane as vice president of government affairs. The Saddle and Sirloin Club will induct its newest member, Mr. Robert (Bob) Hall Jr. , this fall. Mr. Hall is the long-time owner and president of Central Kentucky’s Farmers Feed Mill and its Hallway Feeds brand. In honor of Mr. Hall’s induction, the Robert Hall Jr. Award Fund has been established at Blue Grass Community Foundation to provide awards to the winning team and coach of the National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest, held annu- ally at the North American International Livestock Exposition . The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a $294,000 grant to study the effects of aging on beef. Dale Woerner, Ph.D. , associate professor and the Cargill Endowed Professor in Meat Science at Texas Tech University , will lead a group evaluating the use of new mass spectrometry technology to determine tenderness, flavor and juiciness of beef in real time. A group of Texas Tech researchers, in collaboration with researchers at Colorado State University and the USDA Agricul- tural Research Service , is taking on that task. Iowa Omaha-based Green Plains Inc. , announced it has com- pleted the sale of 50 percent of Green Plains Cattle Company LLC shares for $77 million. The sale was a joint venture by Green Plains and a group of investment funds that include AGR Partners , TGAM Agribusiness Fund Holdings-B LP and StepStone Atlantic Fund LP . Green Plains Inc is considered the largest ethanol company in Nebraska, with plants in Minne- sota, Iowa, Tennessee and Texas. Company Blueprint Media , a full-service media company, has introduced a new business model and management team in order to provide more comprehensive services to its clients. Jessie Topp-Becker will lead the Retainer Media division; Samantha Murnin will lead the Projects division and Micky Burch will oversee the Publications division. Progressive Beef™ , a cattle management and sustainability program for feedlot operators, is one of the first programs to be recognized by the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef for being an industry leader in sustainable beef production.
