44 CALF News • October | November 2021 • www.calfnews.net Trail’s End BRIAN SCOTT ALLMER , 55, of Briggsdale, Colo., passed away Aug. 26, in Greeley, Colo. Brian was always involved in agri- culture, managing the family farm, working at Lextron Animal Health, Colorado Equipment and then for 1010 KSIR Radio. He was a trailblazer in ag radio, creating The BARN (Brian Allmer Radio Network), FarmCast Radio and Colorado Ag News Network. Brian believed heavily in the investment of the youth of the world, our nation, our state and our local com- munities, volunteering his time with Colorado FFA and 4-H organizations, as well as fair and show boards. Brian is survived by his wife, Connie, a daughter, his mother and siblings. RICHARD “MILES” MCKEE, PH.D. , 91, passed away Aug. 30, in Manhattan, Kan. Miles grew up on a ranch in Chase County, Kan. He attended Kansas State University (KSU) and received a degree in animal science. He enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps and served in the Korean War as a first lieu- tenant. Upon completion of his service, he worked as a beef herdsman on ranches in Kansas, Missouri and Michigan. He returned to KSU as the herdsman for the purebred beef unit. Miles received his Doctoral Degree in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky in 1968, and returned to KSU, joining the Animal Science and Industry faculty where he received numerous teaching awards and developed a reputation as a top beef cattle judge. His greatest legacy is as an academic advi- sor, guiding, mentoring and caring for generations of students. Miles is survived by his four children. CARL STEVENSON , 103, passed away Sept. 8, in Red Rock, Ariz. Carl earned a degree in animal husbandry from UC Davis in 1940 and was drafted into the army and joined a Veterinary Corp Unit in Ft. Bliss, Texas. He served more than four years in World War II. His primary responsibility was taking care of the mules that pulled and packed artillery. Following the war, Carl spent four years on the Giffen Cantua Ranch in California where his passion for cattle feeding was realized. In 1951, he moved to Continental, Ariz., to start a cattle feeding operation for the Farmers Investment Company. Working in conjunction with the University of Arizona, he and researchers developed the art of cooking and rolling grain, which Carl fully implemented in his own feeding operations. In 1964, Stevenson started Red Rock Feeding Co., in Red Rock, Ariz. Still operating today, it has grown to a 30,000-head feedyard with 1,200 acres of additional farmland. Carl was inducted into the Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame in 2020. Carl is survived by his wife, Betty, and four children. COR VAN RAAY , 85, passed away July 29, in Alberta, Canada. Born in Hol- land, Van Raay became a prominent cattle and grain farmer, entrepreneur and philanthropist in Alberta. Originally a beet farmer in Alberta, he added barley, potatoes and wheat to his crops. In time, he bought land and cattle, developed large feedlots and honed his marketing skills. Cor became a leader in Canada’s cattle and grain industry. He received many honors, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and was inducted into the Alberta Hall of Fame. Cor is survived by his six children. EDWARD ANDERSON “ANDY” WEARIN , 73, passed away Aug. 5 in Cheyenne, Wyo. Andy grew up on the family farm in Red Oak, Iowa, and worked on the family ranch in Hyannis, Neb., in the summer where his love for horses, cattle and roping blossomed. He graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in ag business. Andy managed the Prairie States Feed- lot in Alliance, Neb., for 13 years before managing the Wearin Bros. Cattle Company in Hyannis. After selling the ranch in 2012, Andy and his wife, Georgeann, moved to Cheyenne where they owned and operated the Riata Ranch Event Center. The couple relocated to Crowley, Texas, in 2019 to enjoy retirement. Andy is survived by his wife and three stepsons. CALF COMMUNITY On the Human Side National The National Cattlemen’s Beef Asso- ciation Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Research Jennifer Nealson was named a 2021 Outstand- ing Woman in Business by the Denver Business Journal . Texas Texas Tech University has named Thu “Annelise” Nguyen the School of Veterinary Medicine’s new associate dean for research. Nguyen is a founding faculty member of the school and was a professor of toxicology prior to this appointment. Company Animal Health & Nutrition Company announced that it has rebranded as Axiota Animal Health . Formed in 2019 as an animal health and nutrition platform by Paine Schwartz Partners , Axiota serves the cattle industry through its operat- ing companies, MULTIMIN USA and MS Biotec . Zinpro Corporation has hired Peter Close as its new vice president of global marketing. Close will help grow the busi- ness and brand awareness while overseeing three critical busi- ness functions, including marketing, sustainability and strategy.
