37 CALF News • April | May 2018 • www.calfnews.net On the Human Side Trail’s End Raoul Baxter, 68, passed away sud- denly March 9 in Fort Mitchell, Ky. His extensive education – bachelor’s degrees in history, Russian language and biol- ogy, a master’s in equine nutrition, in addition to degrees in business and law – groomed him for a successful career in the food industry. He started his career at Bi-County Farm Bureau in Kentucky as an animal nutritionist and sales man- ager before joining Kahn’s Company/ Sara Lee Meat Group where he was the youngest senior vice president, a trend he continued as senior vice president for John Morrell & Company. Raoul worked for Smithfield Foods for over 25 years serving as the VP of business development, president of Smithfield J.V. Company in Mexico, and president of Smithfield International. After he retired in2006, he consulted with companies around the world. He was once recog- nized as one of CALF News’ Movers and Shakers. Raoul is survived by his wife, Barbara, two children and four grandchildren. Jeffrey (Jeff) L. Biegert, 65, passed away Feb. 14, in Denver, Colo. In 1976, Jeff started a liquid feed manufactur- ing and cattle-feeding company called Biegert Feeds. Now known as Midwest PMS, the business has grown into 10 manufacturing sites across Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Iowa and South Dakota. Jeff owned extensive ranching properties throughout the Midwest and was a founding partner of Power Genetics, a seedstock com- pany. He maintained ownership in Fort Kearney Feeders, a 58,000-head operation, and North Platte Feeders, an 82,000-head operation. In 2017, Jeff was inducted into the Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame. Jeff is survived by his wife, Sally, three daughters and four grandchildren. Sharon Wormington, 64, passed away March 9 in Garden City, Kan. A devoted beef supporter, Sharon, was a volunteer with the All-American Beef Battalion, and spent many of her weekends travel- ing to military posts, dishing out beef and thanks to America’s service mem- bers. She was also once a CALF Cameo Featured Lady. She is survived by her husband, Kurt Roberts, a daughter and three grandchil- dren. National Gregg Doud has been confirmed as the U.S. Trade Representative Chief Agri- culture Negotiator. At one time, Doud was chief economist for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association . Since then, he has served on the Senate Agriculture Committee and was president of the Commodity Markets Council . Kansas Sam Hands was recognized as the 2018 Kansas Stockman of the Year by the Livestock & Meat Industry Council . Hands operates Triangle H , a farming, cow-calf, stocker and finishing operation in southern Finney County. Texas William F. “Bill” Brown , formerly a researcher and administra- tor at the University of Tennessee (UT), has been named the new dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources (CASNR) at Texas Tech University . Brown was dean for research and director of UT’s Agricultural Experi- ment Station since 2008. He replaces interim CASNR dean Steve Fraze , who has served in the role since August 2016 when Michael Galyean was named provost. Company Archer Daniels Midland Company announced that Samson Li has been named president, ADM Animal Nutrition . Li previously served as managing director of the Asian business unit and as a member of the Executive Committee for Nutreco . Before that, he worked at Novus International as vice president, sales and marketing. CattleFax members elected Dale Smith , a cattle producer from Amarillo, Texas, as president at the 50th annual business meeting held during the Cattle Industry Convention. Smith is a cow-calf, stocker operator and cattle feeder based out of the Texas panhandle with operations in the Texas Panhandle, Colo- rado and the Southeast. He has served on the boards of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association , Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association , among others. CattleFax president elect is Don Quincey of Chiefland, Fla. Quincey is a fifth-generation rancher and cattle feeder in Florida and is a past president of the Florida Cattle- men’s Association . Other directors currently serving terms are: Todd Allen , Newton, Kan.; Pono Von Holt , Kamuela, Hawaii; Mark Frasier , Fort Morgan, Colo.; Jerry Adams , Broken Bow, Neb.; and Jeff Sparrowk , Clements, Calif. Tom Jensen , Omaha, Neb., is serving as treasurer. Lallemand Animal Nutrition announces the addition of Nicole Walrod as a terri- tory business manager for North America. Walrod will support customers in Mis- souri, Arkansas, Louisiana, eastern Okla- homa and eastern Texas. Walrod worked at Midwest Veterinary Supply as a territory manager. In addition, Wendy Hushon joins the global silage team as strategic marketing manager, forage additives. Hushon moves to the global silage team after working as the marketing communications manager for Lallemand Animal Nutrition North America since 2013.
