In the beginning of CALF News, Champ Gross would go into a feedyard and take a picture of a lady for a column he called (in those days) “The Filet Mignon” that was featured in the back of the magazine. And it’s still there today. The name has changed several times and has been called The Top Cut and Cameo, but is currently CALF’s Featured Lady.

An acronym standing for California Arizona Livestock Feeder, CALF News was established in the early 1960s by Champ Gross. “He was a funny little guy from Belgium,” CALF News Editor and Publisher Betty Jo Gigot explains. “He wore tweed coats that had leather on the sleeves; he loved martinis and cigars, and is fondly remembered.” Gross had some friends in the feedyard businesses, and he decided that it’d be kind of nice to do a little pamphlet, which he called CALF News - and that’s how it started out in California.

Robust cattle prices are forecast for 2025 – but don’t overlook market barriers that may nullify a nice profit. Producers & feeders are urged to mitigate tight supplies, input costs, demand & drought heading into the new year. Find out why on page 14 of the current issue of CALF.

Long-time meat and livestock industry leader and agriculture champion John Huston passed away Dec. 13, 2024. He was 80 years old.

Huston was president of the National Live Stock and Meat Board in Chicago from 1980 until the organization’s merger with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association in 1996. He joined the Meat Board in 1967 and retired as NCBA executive vice president after a 32-year livestock and meat industry career.

Known for his marketing savvy and outstanding public speaking and organizational skills, Huston was highly respected for his ability to build a passionate and dedicated staff team, promoting the livestock industry with commitment and zeal.

Huston grew up on a general livestock and grain farm in Roseville, Ill. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Education and received that school’s Coultas Memorial Award as Outstanding Senior in the College of Agriculture. His strong ties to his alma mater continued throughout his life. He served as President of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) Alumni Association, Chairman of the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation, Delegate to the National Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching, and Chair of the Chancellor’s Commission for University of Illinois Extension.

Recipient of the 2023 Beef Visionary Award from the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, Huston’s other numerous awards for leadership and contributions during his distinguished career are numerous.

Huston is survived by Anne, his wife of 50 years, daughter Katie Gallagher (Dennis), and sons Patrick and Mark, brother Pat and many nieces and nephews.

He was instrumental in planning. passing and implementing the checkoff program. Not sure we'd have the program without his input. Likeable dude, too.

Many memories of John Huston, 🥩🥩 and our ties with the BEEF Industry.
