Kari Risty is proof that ranch wives are practical, flexible, hardy kid-raisers who can cook and run a cattle chute. Born at Rahme, N.D., she grew up raising Suffolk sheep, Angus and Maine-Anjou cattle.
Risty’s worked a variety of jobs in her lifetime, but seems most comfortable in a hospital setting. She’s spent a couple years at Bismarck in the radiology department and two more in Hettinger as a nurse’s aide.
Asked about her husband, she gave a laugh and shook her head. She’d met him at a town celebration in Bison while on a date with someone else, “the poor guy.” The “poor guy” eventually got ditched, and Risty married Tad. They have three children – Anson, six, Brylee, eight, and Kohl, nine – attending school in Bison.
Her current priorities are children, husband and ranch. She’s an ace at cattle processing, running a hydraulic chute and simultaneously watching the kids. She runs the hay rake in the summer, an indispensable member of the haying crew.
Gardening provides enjoyment, as well as food, her favorite being homemade apple cider. She loves wood working, using old barn and corral wood to make items for her home.
Being an apple cider connoisseur, Risty would someday love to learn winemaking.
She presently works at a local insurance agency in Prairie City one day a week, and teaches religious education for the Catholic children in Reva.
